2012 MLB Season Home Run Odds: What Will Be The High Number?

The New York Yankees, Texas Rangers and Boston Red Sox hit more home runs last year than any other team and were the only one’s to crack 200. It’s no wonder all three teams are heavy favorites to win the World Series in MLB Betting Odds.

As valuable as pitching is, there is no more valued asset than pure, raw power that can change the game in an instant. We saw that this winter when teams spent big to acquire more power to their lineups. The Los Angeles Angels inked Albert Pujols and his 445 career dingers to a massive contract in December. A month later, Prince Fielder stunned everyone by signing with his father’s alma mater, the Detroit Tigers.

Joey Votto’s huge deal with the Cincinnati Reds show some teams are even going to great lengths to make sure their homegrown stars stay in town.

Power is at a premium and every team is making sure they get a piece.

Last year, 24 players swatted over 30 home runs and two – Jose Bautista and Curtis Granderson – made it to 40.

Bautista’s incredible ascent to the top of baseball’s tower power continued in 2011, hitting 43 homers to lead the league. It was his second-straight year of 40 homers or more after swatting 54 in 2010.

But hitting 50 or more has become somewhat of an anomaly since the steroid era was phased out, and it’s more likely the league leader will be somewhere around 40 again. According to Interops MLB Betting Odds, there are +140 odds the league leader will hit 40 or less.

If Bautista, or any other hitter for that matter, manages 48 or more, it’s a +160 payout.
