Billy Beane became all the rage this past year when Moneyball, the docu-drama narrative on his rebuilding efforts with the Oakland Athletics in the early 2000s, hit theaters. At the heart of the story was how he bandaged together a caravan of some of the finest transients MLB had to offer, and still managed to win 100 games in a season. Of course, none of that could have happened if not for an improbable 20-game win streak late in the year.
Not the Yankees. Not the Sawx. The stinky A’s.
Proof that the MLB, with more new champions in any other sport since 2000, is one league where fortune can change in an instant.
And with so many teams, specifically in the American League, beefing up their lineups in the offeseason, there is a punchers chance another team will crack 20 wins in a row this year.
Sure, odds are against it on Intertops, with a +1000 payout if it happens.
But the one appealing fact is that baseball’s biggest movers this winter, the Los Angeles Angels and Miami Marlins aren’t just one-trick ponies. The Angels added the game’s best pure hitter in Albert Pujols, with his 445 homeruns and .328 lifetime batting average. They also tacked on C.J. Wilson to join Jered Weaver and Dan Haren.
Meanwhile, the Marlins signed Jose Reyes to leadoff a lineup already including Hanley Ramirez and Giancarlo Stanton to go along with a staff of Josh Johnson, Anibal Sanchez and Mark Buehrle. The National League would likely have the best opportunity for producing 20-straight wins with a large majority of the game’s sluggers migrating to the American League.
But don’t sleep on the Detroit Tigers either. With AL Cy Young and MVP winner Justin Verlander, lights-out closer Jose Valverde and a lineup that will streak your pants, the Tigers have a great opportunity in a weak AL Central.
