A huge series win over the Philadelphia Phillies has the New York Mets a big mover in recent World Series Futures, going from a 70/1 longshot to 32/1 almost overnight. New York pounded out 22 runs in a three-game sweep against the Phillies, a statement win that put New York just a half game out of first place in the NL East.
Now, the Mets have to keep that momentum going as they start a weekend series against the Miami Marlins Friday night. New York has been hot this week, but Bovada’s Mets vs. Marlins Series Price is giving Miami a -175 line to win the weekend set, compared to New York’s +145.
Bovada’s Mets vs. Marlins Betting Lines are favoring Miami by 1 1/2 runs with a -118 moneyline.
The Phillies were huge favorites to win the division, but find themselves at the bottom of the pack thanks to a surprising start by the Mets. They’re hitting .264 on the season and got a welcomed boost from starter Johan Santana, who’s ERA is 2.61 after missing a majority of the last two seasons with shoulder trouble.
He only has one win due to a lack of run support, including a no-decision against the Marlins ealier this year. Santana struck out a season-high 11 in that contest.
Same story for tonight’s opponent, Mark Buehrle. After signing a big contract in the off-season, Buehrle has been spectacular with an ERA below 2.90 but is just 2-4. He’s coming off his best performance of the year, a five-hit shutout against the Padres last weekend, and has only walked six hitters in 41 1/3 innings.
Meanwhile, the Marlins have been enjoying the same recent success after a franchise-best road trip. Miami has won five in a row after an 8-1 west coast swing that went through San Francisco, San Diego and Houston. It is winning close games, taking four contests by two runs or fewer, including a 5-3 win over the Astros on Wednesday. It pushed the Marlins over .500 for the first time since mid April, and back into the NL East race.
That’s good news considering the Marlins recent low-scoring history against the Mets. They only scored four while getting swept by New York earlier this year, and have lost nine of the last 11 meetings.
David Wright continues to drive the Mets offensively, hitting .376 on the season, and is even better on the road. In a month and half, the third baseman is batting .414 on the road with eight extra base hits.
