The Miami Marlins are finally coming back around, putting together a string of firsts for the season. Now, its time to get down to the real business of climbing back into the NL East race with the Atlanta Braves and Washington Nationals.
Miami won back-to-back home games in its new park for the first time, thanks to Hanley Ramirez’s three-run bomb. Closer Heath Bell also got his first save of the year, and manager Ozzie Guillen managed his first game since his suspension for negative comments about Cuban president Fidel Castro.
“Obviously talking about some issues is not my business,” he told reporters. “My business is to talk about baseball…I learned a very tough lesson. You learn from mistakes. I hope this mistake makes me a better person.”
Wednesday night, the Marlins roll Mark Buerhle out to face a familiar foe. Buerhle, who spent his first 11 seasons with the Chicago White Sox, saw plenty of his former rival through his career and finally seems to be figuring them out. He’s won two-straight decisions against the Cubs with a 1.82 ERA over his last four.
He might not need to be that good to get a win Wednesday. The Marlins are hitting .275 with 19 runs over their last four home games, amending a tough start to the year which they hit .235 over their first eight home games.
That would be a welcomed change from Buerhle’s first two starts in which he’s gotten a combined one run of support.
“I was making good pitches,” he told the Associated Press after his last start. “They just hit the ball and got a few in there. But I threw well and I thought my location was there.”
Bovada’s MLB Player Props projects Buerhle to strike out about four batters on the night.
The lefty will face Matt Garza, who is tasked with halting Chicago’s three-game losing streak.
Garza threw seven scoreless innings against the Marlins in his first start against them last year. He is 3-1 with a 3.90 ERA in five starts lifetime against Miami.
Bovada is favoring the Marlins by 1 1/2 runs with a -135 moneyline.
