Minnesota Twins vs. New York Yankees Betting Odds For April 19, 2012

Who saw this coming?

Justin Morneau seems to be getting his swing back just in time for the Minnesota Twins to blindside the New York Yankees. The Twins, owners of baseball’s worst record heading into the series, have now won two of three and are in position to win a series in a tough venue. And they’ve done it on the bat of Morneau.

The lefty hit two homers Wednesday night in a 6-5 win, and also had a tater in Monday’s 7-3 victory. Morneau only had four home runs total last year when he missed more than half the season due to a wrist injury and concussion.

“It’s been a long road,” said Morneau told the Associated Press. “Not the end – just the start of more good days to come.”

In fact, the former AL MVP has only played in 150 games over the last two seasons combined.

But he’s come back in a big way to dig the Twins out of a massive funk at Yankee Stadium. Before this week, Minnesota was just 7-33 in the Bronx during manager Ron Gardenhire’s tenure. It had been bounced from the playoffs four times by New York since 2001.

Morneau is 2-for-6 against Yankees starter for Thursday night, Phil Hughes.

Hughes ERA is right at 9.00 after two ugly starts. He only lasted 3 1/3-innings in a 7-1 loss to the Los Angeles Angels over the weekend, that after going just 4 2/3 against the Tampa Bay Rays in his first start.

“It’s tough,” Hughes told the AP. “I came to camp, I felt good with my stuff. We broke camp and things just haven’t gone the way I would have liked. But I just have to keep working hard and get things right.”

Still, he’s 1-0 lifetime against Minnesota with a 2.84 ERA.

Bovada is actually favoring New York by 1 1/2 runs, with a -220 moneyline. Derek Jeter has provided the team’s biggest offensive boost, hitting four home runs and 10 RBI. He had only six homers a year ago. Bovada’s MLB Player Props expects more of the same from him Thursday night.

Anthony Swarzak will start for the Twins after getting just two runs of combined support in his first two starts.
