Last year’s regular season in baseball could not have ended any more ____. Depending on what side you were on, that word could be dramatically different. It could not have been scripted better and SportsCenter could not have fawned over it any more than it did.
The AL is now packed with loads of talent, but in the East, it’s all on two teams. The Red Sox and Yankees need no explanation of who they have or why they are favored to get another ring. The Sox brought in a bunch of nasty to hang out in the bullpen, and the Yankees brought in guys who amazingly can throw more than 5 innings. The Yanks currently lead the odds to win the 2012 AL East at -150 or 2/3 odds.
The team in Boston, with a new manager in Bobby Valentine and less fried chicken in the clubhouse, are 2nd on the odds to win the division at 3/1 or +300.
The Rays, however, every year need a whole 30 minute special just to get up to speed on their roster. Besides Evan Longoria and David Price, the star power of the Rays stops there unless you live in Florida. Joe Madden has become a Manager of the Year contender each year, and continues to march the Rays to the postseason even though some players are still getting paid in Trident Layers. Bovada.com is giving the underdogs +450 or 9/2 odds to repeat as division champions.
Don’t sleep on the Blue Jays either, they’ve got a lot more going for them besides the throwback uniform. Jose Bautista scrapes clouds, Ricky Romero is severely undervalued, and Brett Lawrie and Kyle Drabek could be future All-Stars. The Blue Jays are getting a +1200 line to win the division, or 12 to 1 odds.
Despite promising futures for Adam Jones and Matt Weiters, the Baltimore Orioles have the second worst odds in the entire MLB to win the World Series at 150/1 according to Bovada, and not much better odds of winning the AL East at 100/1. Buck Showalter is going to need a stress ball or a Stretch Armstrong.
